About kerala and Role of Private Hospital's in Kerala

Kerala has a long history of organized healthcare. As per documents, by the time the state was formed in 1956, the foundation for a medical care system accessible to all citizens was already laid. The easy accessibility and coverage of medical care facilities has played a dominant role in shaping the health status of Kerala. Some of the hospitals in Kerala are more than 50 years old. Health had been a major area of spending in the budget from early years in Kerala.

Kerala though the government sector has well spread health care network it is now well equipped and unable to provide quality health care service to the people. Even before independence the missionaries and few Private Doctors started clinics and small hospitals for the common men with lowest possible charges. With the growth of private sector the government could easily achieve the parameters equal to that of developed countries. This lead to the world wide known “Kerala Model”.

Gradually the public health care system gone down in quality and the growth of Private Sector helped the people to get their health needs. Now 70% of the population depends on the private sector for health care. As such, not ignoring the new developments in public sector, private sector is still on top in providing better health care to the people.

The annual growth rate of Government healthcare expenditure has been showing a steady increase. India’s first ever Human Development Report published in 2002, placed the Southern state of Kerala on top of all the other states in India, because of easy accessibility and coverage of medical care facilities.

History of KPHA

Though in the nineteen nineties more than 1500 Private Hospital were functioning in the state of Kerala, there was no common platform to mingle and discuss their issues. And there was no association except CHAI (Catholic Health Care Association of India), which was an organization of mission hospitals run by Catholics.

Kerala Private Hospital’s Association was formed in Thrissur on 24-August-1997 accepting the bylaws and the Head Quarters were “Aswini Hospital, Thrissur”. The KPHA is only association which could represent all the private hospitals in kerala without any sort of differentiation between the very small hospitals to the Hi-Tech hospitals which have joined the association as members. Now KPHA could protect the interest of all.

The state office of the Association is known as the HEAD QUARTERS.
